Preventing Headaches
This is a broad topic - Finding out what triggers the headache is very helpful, but requires action and commitment on your part. If its diet. Start a diet log, track what you eat and when you're getting the headaches. See if there is a correlation, and avoid those foods. If its spine related, prevention falls in the area of (1) posture, (2) stress reduction and (3)strengthening.
Posture-
1 – STOP SLEEPING ON YOUR STOMACH... Alright, I know this only applies to some of you and can be very hard to break this habit. Trying a cervical pillow may help, but seems to only work for some people, and there is a wide variety of pillows. CUT THE LIGHTS! - Also, make sure there is not a significant light source in your room (TV left on, aquarium, etc...) which affects how well your brain rests while it sleeps. Often sleeping on your stomach is a result of not being able to achieve a deep enough, restful, state of sleep. 2 – Do you sit at a desk for long periods of time? - Take a stretching break every 40 minutes or get up and walk to the drinking fountain.
Stress Reduction - people don't realize how big of a factor this is to their headache problems. 1- Everybody has their own source of stress and finding a way to deal with it can be a very tough thing to do. But DEAL WITH it; don't avoid it. This could involve seeing a counselor. It's often felt to be taboo to seek professional help when dealing with stress, but that is a problem with our culture, and don't let it be a barrier for you. 2- Take a 30 minute walk OUTSIDE and focus on positive things in your life. Make sure to keep your head up and don't stare at your feet while walking.
Strengthening your spine 1- Often chronic headaches come from problems in the upper back. So, stand up, slightly lift your chin, and SQUEEZE your shoulder blades together. Hold this for 15-20 seconds then relax. Do this for 5 sets, 3-4 times per day. Headaches can be tricky, both in their cause and treatment, but we want to work closely with you to fix the cause of why your having the headaches and guide you in preventing them from coming back. We know you have a choice in your health care, and we thank you for trusting us. If you know someone with headaches that could benefit from this information, please don't hesitate to send them a link to this website. WATCHING YOUR BACK!
